The cookie cutter approach is clearly failing our nation and I worry what lies ahead. As for your consumption issues, eliminating phantom loads is a great place to start. Also if you are using oil lamps at night, I once read an article in Mother Earth about using olive oil instead of traditional lamp fuels...I never tried it but I do know those years burning kerosene, despite what it is, were a lot more special than flipping switches.
