And that's why I love snow

The west coast of Newfoundland had its first snowfall earlier this week, but for once, New York is not so far behind.

After an early morning odyssey of four trains to get to a yoga class (usually one train and 20 minutes - thanks MTA!), I was a bit grumpy about the prospect of three trains to get back home.  Yet, when we emerged from underground to head into Queensboro Plaza on the N train, everyone in the car gasped simultaneously.

What had started as rain in Manhattan had turned to snow.  It was one of those brief moments in the city when everyone is laughing and smiling and talking with strangers in delight about what is happening.

Imagine that!  One moment, everyone is glumly riding along, thinking their thoughts, planning their day, ignoring those around them....and then it snows.

love it! we haven't had ours yet but weather-types are reckoning it may hit the province tomorrow - probably not here in the balmy south of Halifax, but hey!

I remember those moments in NYC. One of my favorite things. And they are not as rare a bird as one might suppose. Particularly on the 7 for one reason or another...

It is true -the 7 train seems to cultivate those kinds of moments. Is it because it is above ground so we feel less claustrophobic? Or because most people are new to this country/city and less deeply entrenched in the "never look at a stranger" thing? I do love the #7 train...only wish it would run better on weekends!!

Yeah, that spotty bit of service I do not miss at all!

Train lines I remember more of those moments (other than the 7) were the #1 and the B or whatever it is that takes one from Coney Island back to the mainland. A handful of people and Kate and I watched a pigeon get on that one at a stop, and then disembark 2 stops later like it knew exactly what it was doing. Maybe it's the outer boroughs and upstate Manhattan?
